Cambodia Scuba Diving

I was looking on the internet last night and reading some Cambodia Dive sites and I was impressed with the growth of the industry there.  But with growth there are also downsides.

When I started EcoSea back in Nov 2000 the only real dive operation was Chez Claud who is still there and still has the best view in Sihanoukville on his hill over by the Soka Beach resort, since then there have been a few that have come and gone.  It was very rare to have more than 1 dive boat on a reef, today, on most days, it is almost like being in Koh Toa .

I remember fondly now the early days when we would see pink dolphins just outside the harbor and Cobia's were a regular site. The first time I saw one was on a bad vis day and it scarred the hell out of me as I thought it was a shark.  I have a picture some where of the 3 huge cobias that I saw out at Koh Tang.

I always thought that the natural progression would be that Koh Tang and Koh Prins would be the islands that would be used as dive bases.  But with the fuel costs the economics make more financial sense to be diving the Koh Rung Group which has a lot of good diving to be sure but it is not special like Koh Tang with Virgin Reef, Lost reef and Statues where you were almost guaranteed a  palagic with dolphins, swordfish and even whales sometimes spotted.

I will look forward to diving and staying  Koh Tang again sometime in the future.
